Alfred Scoglio holds a bachelor degree in Biological Science and is a Massachusetts Certified Teacher and Registered Sanitarian. He is the Founder, President and Chief Course Instructor of ALSCO Food Check Group. Scoglio began his company in 2002 after a long and successful career as a food safety regulator and consultant. He is willing and able to serve you as a Food Safety Consultant, Certification Class Instructor, Inspector and HACCP Expert. Here's why:
Alfred is a cum laude graduate of Salem State College, where in 1974 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. Mr. Scoglio passed the Food and Drug Inspector Civil Service Exam in 1975, the Registered Sanitarian Exam in 1979, and worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Division of Food and Drugs for over 22 years.
During Mr. Scoglio's career with the Division of Food and Drugs, he supervised the Massachusetts Dairy Plant Inspection Unit for seven years. There he instituted a program for monitoring antibiotic drug residues in milk for Massachusetts. He also worked to coordinate Massachusetts' bottled water program in the mid-1980s. In 1983, Alfred was appointed as his Division's first Training Coordinator, in which he orchestrated a program to standardize state and local health inspectors in traditional and HACCP inspection approaches. Later during his state tenure, Mr. Scoglio was the Division's liaison with FDA Region 1 (New England) for food processor and food warehouse contract inspections.
Among his various accomplishments, Scoglio authored several guidelines and published articles that appeared in The Food and Drug Reporter. He was a voting delegate for Massachusetts at the 1997 Special Conference on Interstate Milk Shippers. He also penned the New Policy on Frozen Desserts for Massachusetts Boards of Health and developed policies and procedures for the vitamin fortification of milk in Massachusetts dairy plants. Alfred developed the 52-item Food Establishment Inspection Form, which was used by Massachusetts local and state inspectors for 2 decades in the conduct of restaurant and retail food inspections.
Prior to his appointment as trainer, writer, and supervisor for the Division of Food and Drugs, Mr. Scoglio began his career as a field inspector of restaurants, retail food establishments, food and beverage manufacturing plants, bakeries, food warehouses, learning the ropes and gleaning insight from top experts of the day in state and federal regulatory agencies. While working his way up to Senior Inspector and finally Unit Supervisor, Scoglio expanded his knowledge base and broadened his experience evaluating compliance in food & beverage facilities, dairy plants, and seafood operations, and in the investigation of food-borne illnesses, product complaints and suspected food and drug tampering cases.
Alfred has received numerous training certificates from FDA in all arenas of food establishment inspection, and extensive training in FDA's Seafood HACCP program, including the HACCP Regulators Course.
Mr. Scoglio began his consulting career in 1999, working three years as Vice President of Technical and Regulatory Affairs for Massachusetts' largest food safety consulting firm. His duties included: Lead Auditor, HACCP Developer, and Regulatory Liaison.
In August of 2002, Mr. Scoglio began his own food safety consulting business. His company ALSCO Food Check Group teaches Food Manager Certification classes; conducts one-on-one consulting and training for restaurants and food processors; and develops HACCP Plans for the food industry. Scoglio has personally instructed over 2000 candidates for certification, performed thousands of restaurant and food processor inspections and written over fifty HACCP plans.
From 2003 to 2006, Alfred also served as part-time Health Inspector for the Town of Whitman, Massachusetts, and was a Voting Member of the South Shore Recycling Committee, and sat on the Plymouth County Coalition for Emergency Preparedness. Mr. Scoglio is an active member of the Massachusetts Health Officers Association (MHOA), Massachusetts Environmental Health Association (MEHA), Massachusetts Restaurant Association (MRA) and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Having retired from government work in late 2006, Alfred now runs his company full time.
